The School Of Artisan Food LogoLeading Artisan School Launches Food For Health Course For People Living With Cancer

The School of Artisan Food in Nottinghamshire has added a Food for Health course specifically designed for people after a cancer diagnosis. The course was devised after one of the School’s original founders and Chair of the Trustees, Alison Swan Parente, struggled to find clear advice on what, and what not to eat, after her own cancer treatment.

Alison said: “When I finished my chemo and radiotherapy and resurfaced into the world, I looked for advice on how to keep as well as possible. There were so many mixed messages out there about diet and nutrition. I then heard Sheila Dillon on the BBC Radio 4 Food Programme talk about how little evidence-based information is available for people living with a cancer diagnosis.

“We’ve since devised a course that aims to show people what changes in diet might be helpful and we hope to reduce, rather than promote, anxiety around food and find some interesting ways to source and cook it.”

The two day course, designed and led by experienced oncology dietician Kelly McCabe is suited for people with varying diagnoses, post initial treatment, carers of people living with cancer and interested medical staff.   The course will consider good diet fundamentals, explore the impact of cancer treatments on eating, dispel myths around fad diets, teach about immunonutrition*, discuss the best ways to food shop and look at the healthiest cooking methods.

Alison continues: “The School of Artisan Food is ideally placed, both in terms of its physical location and its ethical commitments, to give people the opportunity to explore a multitude of issues around eating and food in a relaxed and comfortable environment.”

The Food for Health course will run on 15 and 16 November at The School of Artisan Food in Nottinghamshire.  This course is giving general nutritional information and is not offering an alternative to medical treatment.
