Schools Get Hands On To Help Homeless
     15 Nov 12

Over 100 schools across Central and Greater London and the South East of England will race to be a part of the World Record breaking attempt taking place on Wednesday 21st November 2012 at The O2 Arena.  An adjudicator from the Guinness World Records will oversee students attempting to smash the current record of 937 cubes solved at the same time set in India earlier this year.

Organised by Depaul UK – the UK’s largest youth homeless charity – students can take part in this fundraiser with a difference by winding their way into the record books!   Rubik’s are donating all the cubes and pledging £100,000 to the charity if the attempt is successful, taking their overall donation to £250,000.

In addition to the record attempt, Depaul UK and Rubik’s will be throwing a Maths Fest which includes ‘Stand Up Maths’ comic Matt Parker, Graffitti Live artists creating a 12ft mural, street artists Maths Buskers, and Rubik’s Cube artist Karl Savage.  All will be showcasing various methods in making maths fun – perfect timing during a period of curriculum reforms which are calling for more demanding educational content.

Tim Harford, Depaul UK’s Head of Donor Care and Community Fundraising said: ‘The uptake has been amazing and we’re confident that we can beat the current record.  The event not only gives school pupils the opportunity to challenge their problem solving skills, but they can learn about community responsibility as well as being part of a world record-breaking event.  The children taking part really will make an impact on the lives of homeless and disadvantaged young people.’

Specially designed Rubik’s Cubes have been created for the event, with each customised cube face a graphic representation of the charity’s work: accommodation, family mediation, training and employment, community work, resettlement and volunteering.  Participants will have to use the ultimate in memory training as the peeling off of stickers is strictly forbidden!
