     20 Aug 13

Discover the Origin returns to Oxford South Parks for an opportunity to interact with foodies and offer commented food and wine tastings. The campaign, which promotes five food and wine products with real provenance will be showcasing at the food lovers’ event on the bank holiday weekend of Saturday 24th – Monday 26th August. All five products of the Discover the Origin campaign carry a guarantee of origin and quality as they benefit from the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status: Parma Ham, Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese, Bourgogne Wines, Douro Wines and Port.

Wine expert and enthusiast Charles Metcalfe will be presenting his daily food and wine matching sessions using a selection of Discover the Origin products. Over the course of the three day festival, Charles is set to captivate and educate foodies in Oxford with his passionate storytelling, anecdotes and impressive knowledge of these products. Charles’ pairing sessions proved to be very popular at previous Foodies Festivals, so please sign up early on the day to secure a seat as places are limited!

Whether you’re a wine novice, or an informed wine connoisseur these classes are perfect, as Charles offers handy information, tips and historical facts from the region of provenance for visitors of all knowledge levels. Don’t miss a chance to experience Parma Ham and Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese and try pairing them with a selection of fine wines and Ports from the well-renowned Bourgogne region in France and the Douro region of Portugal.  The classes will be presented in the Drinks Masterclass Theatre at 2:30pm on each day of the festival.

Discover the Origin was established in 2008 by the European Union campaign and designed to raise awareness around five Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) products:

Bourgogne Wines

Parma Ham

Douro Wines

Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese

Port Wine

Nathalie Hordonneau, coordinator for the Discover the Origin campaign, says: “Foodies Festival Oxford at South Parks offers a wonderful opportunity to interact with consumers eager to discover or re-discover our products. Oxford is a region in which people are very passionate about their food. Our daily food and wine pairing masterclasses provide consumers with opportunities to further experience our products and understand what makes them so special, as well as receiving useful tips on how to use them at home and with friends.”

Wine Expert Charles comments: “I look forward to the Discover the Origin masterclasses at Foodies Festival Oxford. Oxfordshire has a strong foodies’ scene which is ever expanding, from creative chefs to innovative farmers, high quality producers, farmers’ markets, as well as friendly local shopkeepers. During the sessions, I love highlighting Bourgogne as one of the greatest wine regions in the world. The Douro Valley, home to Port and unfortified Douro Wine, is a gloriously traditional yet very innovative wine region, and Parma Ham and Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese are two must-have luxuries for any serious cook. Sharing the information on these great products is always a pleasure – as is tasting them! Grab a free ticket while they’re still available, and join us at 2:30pm for our daily masterclass from Saturday 24th to Monday 26th August.”

At the Discover the Origin exhibition stand, further tasting sessions will be held by fellow foody, Chef Rosemary Nightingale, as well as wine and drink experts Matt Walls and Nathan Nolan. Rosemary will be on hand to demonstrate the expertise required to skilfully slice Parma Ham as well as the authentic way to cut Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese.  Matt and Nathan will be pouring a fine selection of wines for sampling from Bourgogne, in France and wines and Ports from the Douro Valley, in Portugal whilst illustrating what makes them so special and how they can be paired with every day dishes.
